Habitat for Humanity Opens Applications For Affordable Homeownership

Families in need of affordable housing across central Indiana may now apply to become homeowners through Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette. The nonprofit organization, which serves Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White counties, has released its 2025 application guidelines.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific income, debt, and employment requirements. Families must earn between 40% and 80% of the area median income, with at least one year of consistent income. Self-employed applicants must provide two years of tax returns.

Debt requirements include no unpaid collections over $1,000, excluding medical debt, and applicants’ total debt cannot exceed 40% of their gross monthly income. Employment history will also be reviewed for the past two years.

General eligibility rules include:

  • Must have lived or worked in one of the service counties for at least one year
  • No bankruptcy, foreclosure, or eviction within the past three years
  • Must be a permanent resident
  • Cannot have owned a home within the last three years
  • Married applicants must apply jointly with their spouse

Habitat officials encourage families who meet these qualifications to apply. “We want to give hardworking families a chance at safe, affordable housing,” the organization said in its announcement.
