Carson Stands Alone: Votes No To Honoring Kirk

Indiana Congressman André Carson is under fire after joining just 57 other Democrats in voting against a U.S. House resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week in Utah.

The bipartisan resolution — which passed 310-58 — praised Kirk as “a courageous American patriot, whose life was tragically and unjustly cut short in an act of political violence.” All seven of Indiana’s Republican House members voted yes, as did fellow Indiana Democrat Frank Mrvan.

Carson, however, refused to support the measure. In a statement after the vote, Carson said he wanted a broader resolution condemning “all forms of political violence.” But critics say that’s a dodge — that Carson had a clear opportunity to condemn a politically motivated killing and instead chose to make a partisan point.

Carson’s statement further claimed the resolution would “heighten political tension” and “advance censorship and cancel culture,” language that many Republicans — and even some Democrats — dismissed as excuse-making.

The vote has sparked outrage among Hoosiers who see Carson’s decision as disrespectful to Kirk’s grieving family and a refusal to take a clear stand against violence when it targeted a prominent conservative voice.
