Noise Ordiance to be Revised

Frankfort Common Council met Monday evening and passed the first reading of an ordinance that would revise the current ordinances on noise and animal nuisances. Chief Shoemaker stated that this year has seen an increase in complaints regarding noise in town. The new ordinance would increase the fine to $50 for the first citation, and up to $250 for the 3rd. While this would apply to all hours, the concentrated time would be 11pm – 7am.

One big change between the current and proposed ordinances would be creating a time (11pm) that most citizens believed was in the original. The current ordinance has no times listed. Also, it will be replacing the requirement of using a device to measure the sound, and will instead simply state that the noise will not be allowed to be heard off of the property. This also states that noise on public property will not be heard further than 75 ft.

Police officers do not patrol for noise, but rather, the law states that a resident needs to submit a complaint to the police department in order for the police to respond and issue a citation.
