Frankfort Issues Burn Ban

The Frankfort Fire Department has issued a burn ban due to heightened fire danger from ongoing dry conditions. The ban, announced by Fire Chief Matt Stidham, took effect at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, and applies to both the city and the surrounding areas under the department’s protection.

The ban covers Center Township, Jackson Township, Union Township, and portions of Washington Township, in addition to the Frankfort city limits. It prohibits all outdoor burning activities, including:

  • Campfires and bonfires
  • Yard debris burning
  • Agricultural burning
  • Open-pit fires
  • Burning of trash and waste materials
  • Fireworks

Chief Stidham cited Indiana Fire Code Section 307.1.1 and City Ordinance 14-08a, which authorize the fire chief to halt open burning if conditions present a hazard. He emphasized that the measure is necessary to protect lives, property, and natural resources from the risk of rapidly spreading fires.

Violations of the burn ban could result in fines or other penalties under local ordinances. The order will remain in effect until October 8, 2025, unless conditions improve and the Fire Department determines the risk has subsided.

“We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and secure environment during this period of elevated fire risk,” Chief Stidham said.
